Nail Soup
Once upon a time ... in a galaxy far, far away ... well ... let's change that ... and give ourselves an assignment
to bring the Nail Soup to the immediate world around us.

A traveler was passing through town and went to the town square.  Being a simple man, with few belongings,
he set up a small area for himself.  From his coat he pulled out some sticks and a match.  He collected some
branches and started a small fire.  From a nearby drinking fountain, he put some water into his pot.  He then
pulled out a big old nail from another pocket and began to make Nail Soup.

Soon, a woman passed by and curiously looked over.  She approached the man with some small talk.  He
warmly conversed with her.  She then asked, "What are you doing with that pot?"

"Making Nail Soup", he said.
"You can't make Nail Soup", the woman said as she looked into the pot.
"What do you mean?", was the traveler's reply.
"You need FLAVOR!"
"Like what?"
"Like carrots or potatoes", she tersely responded, and then walked away.

A while later she came back and provided the man with a carrot and potato.  He thanked her and asked her
to come back.

Then a rugged farmer began to pass by on a wagon.  He cynically looked over at the traveler as he stopped
his wagon and got off.

"What are you doing with a fire and a pot in the town square?!", the farmer asked in an almost mean tone.

"Making Nail Soup", the traveler said.
"You can't make soup with only a nail and a few vegetables", the farmer said.
"What do you mean?", was the traveler's reply.
"You need more FLAVOR!"
"Like what?"
"Like beef!".  The farmer walked over to his wagon, grabbed some beef he was bringing to the market and
threw it in the pot.

This continued with more skeptics and more contributors until the traveler finished making his Nail Soup ... he
then shared the delicious creation with the woman, the farmer, and others.  Everyone loved it!

SOMETHING FROM NOTHING - when working with others on a project, there comes a time for action ...
usually while others are still at the point of inaction.  People talk, philosophize, bump it up to management,
and more.  A powerful way to eliminate inaction is to just put together a plan or schedule or memo ... others
will jump at the opportunity to "correct" it!  They may scoff at you, but true leaders will note who made it
happen.  Looking at "something" also boosts the creative juices of all team members!  Have faith ... have a
vision ... it will make things happen!

COORDINATION - when we work projects or plans at work, often what people need is something to look at.
Try putting together a complex schedule with a bunch of engineers!  They won't give you any inputs ahead of
time, but they surely will correct what you put in front of them!  Say THANKS and you benefit from a better
schedule or plan!  Everyone will love it if they see their own ingredients in it!

POSITIVE
- a positive attitude brings out so much good in people.  Who wants to go around collecting a list
of others' bad qualities?  A warm, positive outlook gets better ingredients and adds great flavor to all our
endeavors!

RELATIONSHIPS - the traveler received those ingredients because of the good relations he built from the
moment he said hello.  People will do great things for someone that they have a good relationship with.

GENEROSITY - a sharing and kind spirit multiplies our successes.  This may not be a "miracle" of multiplying
loaves ... but a sharing and kind spirit is contagious!  Accepting the ideas and contributions of all team
members multiplies the magnitude of our successes.
