Just the Right Gift
It was a time of the census, so Joseph went back to Bethlehem with Mary, who was with child. After long
travel they were tired and stopped at night to rest. There was no room at the inn so they took refuge in a
stall, where animals lodge. When Herod heard of a newborn prophet, he began to plot ...
For many, the holidays are a cheerful time of shopping, giving, decorating, office parties, and getting
together with family or old friends. But in the midst of all this may come feelings that are not so cheerful. As
much fun as exchanging gifts can be ... the holidays can also be a time of stress and depression. The end of
the year can sneak in some hard thoughts of work deadlines, bill paying, that certain family member, or
anxiety over life gone past. Regardless of what season it is, everyone has a "dark night of the soul" ... a time
when our journey gets too challenging ... when setbacks seem to multiply.
From the dark night there was a star, rising and coming to rest over the child. Wise men came asking,
"Where is this child?" Shepherds came in from the fields with glad tidings.
The other day I went to the mall to return a gift I had purchased. Amid the busyness of life, I changed my
mind. It just wasn't the right one. As I walked by the food court, I bumped into an old friend I hadn't seen in
a while. After the "How do you do?" ... we decided to grab a quick bite to eat to catch up. "Sure I have a few
minutes."
They came and knelt around the manger. What child is this who lay to rest? The wise men presented him
with gold, frankincense, and myrrh.
As we looked around to decide where to eat, we chatted and I was reminded of my friend's warm and
appealing disposition. Although apart over time, little questions ... picked just for me ... revealed an interest
and memory of our friendship. Our laughs over times past put me at ease.
Wrapped with the enthusiasm of a child, our conversation quickened and engaged me. Did you hear about?
What happened to? My friend's attentive listening made me feel understood. There was a realness ... an
honesty shining through. We connected. A smiling glance would catch my eye ... opening the window to my
soul ... telling me that we are not miles apart. To this friend, I was not just an empty box.
As the packaging was peeled back ... my walls went down ... there was no judgment ... this was a trusted
friend ... someone on my side. Yes, that person saw my goodness. ... and knew just who I am.
Angels sing on high! Peace on earth, good will to all! It was a child, wrapped in swaddling clothes, laying in a
manger. Our Saviour is born!
Whether we are spiritual travelers or one of the wise men of business, we can all benefit greatly by
considering what gifts we bear to others. My friend passed along a gift much more precious and long lasting
than most. I resolved to return that gift to others.
That special gift is not just for lovers ... but for everyone ... leaders, managers, politicians, social activists,
teachers, neighbors, co-workers, family members, coaches ...
It is a gift at the core of success and happiness in life. It is a gift as valuable as gold, frankincense, or myrrh.
Whether in business or in day to day life ... success is about relationships.
